02/16/10 FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION The American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association is proud to announce a Request for Pilot Grant Proposals in five potential areas of Orthotic and Prosthetic (O&P) research. For 2010-2011, the association is seeking proposals for one-time grants in amounts up to $7,500 for one year. The leadership of AOPA, working in conjunction with the Center for Orthotics and Prosthetics Learning and Outcomes/Evidence-Based Practice (COPL), recognizes that there is a modest amount of original evidence-based or outcomes research in orthotics and prosthetics. Consequently, AOPA is interested in funding original pilot research that will lead to larger trials that may qualify for government or other research funding support in the following four areas: Areas for submission are: a. AFO treatment of stroke – appropriateness of the 5 custom criteria for custom device use b. Microprocessor Knees and functional value for K 2 patients c. Residual limb and socket interface selection criteria d. Vacuum assisted socket research e. Prosthetic Foot/ankle mechanisms assessment of current functional classifications AOPA will give preference to grants that address evidence-based clinical application in orthotics and prosthetics. NEW CENTER FOR ORTHOTICS & PROSTHETICS LEARNING AND OUTCOMES/EVIDENCE-BASED Practice Established; Announces AWARD of Three Pilot Grants for original O&P patient-oriented, Product-based Research
Supported Research Will Expand Base of Clinical Knowledge in Key Areas of Orthotics and Prosthetics
WASHINGTON, D.C., June 15 – The Center for Orthotics and Prosthetics Learning and Outcomes/Evidence-Based Practice, first established in April, has announced its first research grant awards for clinical research in orthotics and prosthetics. Awards of up to $7,500 each are being made to three primary investigators from different institutions for projects related to: vacuum-assisted socket suspension systems, custom orthoses; and prosthetic ankle mechanisms (active and passive). Funding to support these grants, and the identification of subject areas for a request for proposal circulated earlier this year with a March 31 deadline for abstracts, were provided by the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA). The following projects and awardees were selected by a vote of the entire Board of the new Center, which is comprised of an individual selected from each of eight separate not-for-profit organizations in the orthotics and prosthetics field.
1. “Comparison of Liner-Assisted Suspensions in Transtibial Prosthetics: A Pilot Study,” Robert Kristenberg, Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, Georgia
2. “Estimation of Axis Rotation Position in Non-Articulated Energy Storage and Return Prosthetic Foot-Ankle Mechanisms: Implications for Prosthetic Foot-Ankle Mechanism Efficiency and Motor Control Strategies in Unilateral Transtibial Amputees,” Andrew Sawers, CPO, MSPO, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington
3. “Functional Outcomes of a Custom, Energy Harvesting, ‘Bullfrog’ AFO,” Geza Kogler, Ph.D., CO, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, Georgia.
“The Center is pleased to support the efforts of these investigators undertaking important scientific research in some key areas that demand increasing attention and hold increasing promise for the O&P field,” said William Barringer, the Chairman of the Board for the Center for Orthotics and Prosthetics Learning and Outcomes/Evidence-Based Practice. The Center’s eight-member Board is comprised of one representative each from:
Amputee Coalition of America
American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists
American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics
American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association
Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification
National Association for the Advancement of Orthotics and Prosthetics
National Commission on Orthotic & Prosthetic Education
Orthotic and Prosthetic Assistance Fund
